Las principales fuentes de Rulfo para componer esta obra fueron, sin duda alguna, su formación como lector, su interés por la historia, la antropología y el estudio de las culturas y las gentes de México. Siempre dedicó gran parte de sus lecturas a este ámbito, asistió como oyente a la Universidad y dedicó gran parte de su juventud a recorrer los rincones más interesantes de su país.
