This concise introduction to our earliest ancestors includes the latest discoveries in the field of paleoanthropology and takes a look at the origins, characteristics and migratory patterns of the first sapiens, Original. Illustrations. An approachable and helpfully illustrated introduction to our earliest relatives—the first sapiens and their relatives, origins, characteristics, and earliest migrations. Why aren’t we more like other apes? How did we win the evolutionary race? Find out how “wise” Homo sapiens really are. Prehistory has never been more exciting: New discoveries are overturning long-held theories left and right. Stone tools in Australia date back 65,000 years—a time when, we once thought, the first Sapiens had barely left Africa. DNA sequencing has unearthed a new hominid group—the Denisovans—and confirmed that crossbreeding with them (and Neanderthals) made Homo sapiens who we are today.A Pocket History of Human Evolution brings us up-to-date on the exploits of all our ancient relatives. Paleoanthropologist Silvana Condemi and science journalist François Savatier consider what accelerated our evolution: Was it tools, our “large” brains, language, empathy, or something else entirely? And why are we the sole surviviors among many early bipedal humans? Their conclusions reveal the various ways ancient humans live on today—from gossip as modern “grooming” to our gendered division of labor—and what the future might hold for our strange and unique species. Boafo's sculptural, collage-like paintings present a contemporary image of Black self-empowerment and self-perceptionThis volume accompanies the first museum exhibition in Europe for the Ghanian painter Amoako Boafo (born 1984), who is widely considered to be one of the most important voices from a new generation of Black artists. After graduating from art college in Accra, Boafo began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 2013, where he developed his signature style characterized by his unusual finger-painting technique. Applied to the human body, this creates a sculptural effect that contrasts with the flatness of the rest of the painting. The people portrayed by Boafo--friends, acquaintances and public figures--embody the idea of Black identity that draws on its own culture, to be understood as an act of resistance against the racist labels of a predominantly white society. This form of Black subjectivity is expressed in the appearance of the sitters, who confront the viewer as self-confident individuals and often seek direct eye contact. The artist's intensive engagement with Black history is subtly reflected in his paintings that include motifs inspired by literary works by key pioneers of the Black Freedom Movement.

What happens when a book-loving child can’t get books fast enough? He’ll build a machine that will produce an entire library, of course! With a doohickey here and a whatchamacallit there, he puts his book machine together and waits for the books to pop out . . . and waits . . . and waits. After checking to make sure there wasn’t a dragon inside the machine gobbling up all his books, he deduces that he must write his own story. With adorable illustrations that spark the imagination, every page will have kids falling in love with making ideas come to life.
