'I had seen so many men celebrated and then disgraced, and so many men disgraced and then rehabilitated, that for a long time I kept the hope of someday being held worthy of the history of our country. The wheel had turned, and would turn. Undoubtedly, I would not be there to witness it. I recited to myself the words that men condemned to die defiantly utter on the scaffold: "In twenty years, I shall be a handsome young man again, one of the brave..."' In this enigmatic novella, one hears of the life of a litterateur before, during, and after the Great Revolution. The Peking Opera Reform was awarded Prix Decembre in 2013. This work is translated from the French, La reforme de l'opera de Pekin (Payot & Rivages, Paris, 2013). Autorid: Mael Renouard, Peter Behrman de Sinety
The honey bee has lived in close association with human beings for millennia. Tragically, however, humanity's once intimate connection with this unique creature has been harmed by our increasingly utilitarian and exploitative dealings with the natural world. We are now in urgent need of re-establishing a deeper relationship, not just for the sake of the bees themselves but for the whole of nature - and of course for ourselves.Lorenzen - a true master beekeeper - provides numerous insights to enable a more fruitful engagement with the living world. Offering an enrichment of the knowledge and practice of beekeeping, he discusses the origins of the honey bee, its relationship to the floral kingdom, the digestion of the bee, the treatment of bee diseases as well as appropriate beekeeping techniques. He also develops subtle spiritual concepts such as the idea of the bee colony as an 'individuality' and 'group-soul', providing new depth and wisdom to our understanding of how bees live and work. This small book, a hidden gem that has never before appeared in English, is essential reading for anyone who cares about the future of the honey bee and the future of humanity. This edited collection provides the first accessible introduction to Law and Humanities. Each chapter explores the nature, development and possible further trajectory of a disciplinary law and field. Each chapter is written by an expert in the respective field and addresses how the two disciplines of law and the other respective field operate. This edited work, therefore, fulfils a real and pressing need to provide an accessible, introductory but critical guide to law and humanities as a whole by exploring how each disciplinary law and field has developed, contributes to further scrutinizing the content and role of law, and how it can contribute and be enriched by being understood within the law and humanities tradition as a whole. This volume brings together scholars from intellectual history, social sciences, philosophy and theology to evaluate central questions concerning political violence and aggression. This multidisciplinary collection of essays critically investigates forms and modes of justification of political violence from historical and contemporary perspectives, especially within the context of the development of the idea of Europe and modern European identity. What is meant by political violence and aggression? When and under which conditions is it justified? Who has the right to exercise it and against whom? Answers differ depending on various factors such as pre-established ends, available resources and possibilities of action, historical and socio-economic context, the ideological, political, and religious-theological background of the actors. The volume pays special attention to (a) how the above questions have been addressed and answered political, philosophical and theological thought, and (b) what kind of ideological currents and historical events lay at the background of such considerations.

In 1985 as a young freelance photographer Andrew Catlin was asked to photograph Live Aid at Wembley for Melody Maker magazine. It became the biggest televised concert ever staged - it is estimated that 40% of the entire population of the world tuned in to watch the show. It was an exhausting day, filled with energy and emotion, followed by an all night rush to select and print the photos ready for an editorial meeting at 9:30 the next morning. The pictures tell a powerful story of the intensity of the day and the strength of feeling of both the performers and the audience. The impact of Live Aid has continued to resonate over the intervening 40 years. It was the largest show of global public support for a cause that had ever been seen - a startling wake up call for politicians who had been ignoring the issue of the famine in Ethiopia. The platform that Live Aid created has been used to great effect, by Bob Geldof and Bono in particular, giving them access to some of the most powerful policy makers in the world. This influence has been used to secure humanitarian aid and debt relief for African countries that by now has reached hundreds of billions of dollars. The book shows the event through one pair of eyes, as a personal act of memory by the photographer. It is a tribute to all the organisers, to the musicians who participated, and to the audience that gave their collective voice to the principles of humanity. The day stands as a beacon of hope, showing that people of all kinds can find common ground, and the power of music to unite people.
In Landscape of the Now, author Kent De Spain takes readers on a deep journey into the underlying processes and structures of postmodern movement improvisation. Based on a series of interviews with master teachers who have developed unique approaches that are taught around the world - Steve Paxton, Simone Forti, Lisa Nelson, Deborah Hay, Nancy Stark Smith, Barbara Dilley, Anna Halprin, and Ruth Zaporah - this book offers the rare opportunity to find some clarity in what is often a complex and confusing experience. After more than 20 years of research, De Spain has created an extensive list of questions that explore issues that arise for the improviser in practice and performance as well as resources that influence movements and choices. Answers to these questions are placed side by side to create dialog and depth of understanding, and to see the range of possible approaches experienced improvisers might explore. In its nineteen chapters, Landscape of the Now delves into issues like the influence of an audience on an improviser's choices or how performers "track" and use their experience of the moment. The book also looks at the role of cognitive skills, memory, space, emotion, and the senses. One chapter offers a rare opportunity for an honest discussion of the role of various forms of spirituality in what is seen as a secular dance form. Whether read from cover to cover or pulled apart and explored a subject at a time, Landscape of the Now offers the reader a kind of map into the mysterious realm of human creativity, and the wisdom and experience of artists who have spent a lifetime exploring it.
A painter and writer, Mu Xin (1927-2011) received his artistic education in cosmopolitan Shanghai. During the Chinese Civil War, he fled to Taiwan; at the war's conclusion, he returned to the mainland. Having survived persecution at home, for two decades he lived in New York, and resettled in his hometown, Wuzhen, at the end of his life. In old age, a reclusive Mu Xin enjoyed literary renown in the Sinophone sphere. Of his oeuvre, he was most content with his poetry. Toward Bravery, selected and translated by Mingyuan Hu, is the first collection of Mu Xin's poetry to appear in English. Published in 2017, it is reissued in 2022 in a bilingual format.
