The nine surviving children of the Hegarty clan gather in Dublin for the wake of their wayward brother Liam. It wasn't the drink that killed him - although that certainly helped - it was what happened to him as a boy in his grandmother's house, in the winter of 1968. "The Gathering" is a novel about love and disappointment, about thwarted lust and limitless desire, and how our fate is written in the body, not in the stars.

"A beautifully produced, authoritative volume."Kirkus Reviews Explores Wayne Thiebaud's career as a self-described "thief" who appropriated and reinterpreted old and new European and American artworks. Although artist Wayne Thiebaud (19202021) earned acclaim for his poetic renderings of the prosaic particulars of American life, he openly admitted that "it's hard for me to think of artists who weren't influential on me, because I'm such a blatant thief." Wayne Thiebaud: Art Comes from Art features the artist's virtuosic appropriations and reinterpretations of old and new European and American artworks, spanning from Andrea Mantegna to Édouard Manet, Henri Matisse to Richard Diebenkorn, offering crucial insights into his creative process. Thiebaud's exploration of art, artists, and art historyalong with the practices of copying, appropriation, and reinterpretationallowed him not only to see through the eyes of other artists but also to commune with them through their work, expanding his own vision. This career-long engagement with the concept of appropriation illustrates his perception of art history as an encyclopedic "bureau of standards"a rich repository and resource that offers working artists community with their predecessors and communion with their artworks. Featuring insights from seasoned networking professionals, The Ripple Effect: Networking for Success offers valuable guidance on establishing and nurturing long-term connections. How did you get where you are today? At public speaking events, this is the most frequent question young professionals ask former Ontario politician David Tsubouchi and governance and communications consultant Marc Kealey. The answer: it is impossible to succeed alone. A friend once said, A better network equals a better net worth. This is not to say networking is purely transactional or about how many people one knows: networking is about building relationships based on mutual respect and trust so everyone involved can thrive. Tsubouchi, Kealey, and 18 other accomplished and prominent Canadians have come together to share their stories and advice on networking for success. They represent people from different sectors who started with nothing and faced more barriers than others because of their gender, ethnicity, and/or immigrant status. From entrepreneurs to executives, their experiences show aspiring networkers the true meaning of perseverance and how they can make networking opportunities fulfilling experiences. Door Frame Playbook turns a universal childhood moment, marking growth on a family door frame, into a practical framework for leadership, culture, and outcomes that last. It is not theory or trend. It is a language of alignment that anyone can use every day. What begins as a pencil line on a household frame expands into a lifelong lesson about trust, alignment, and relevance.Drawing on more than forty years in hospitality and leadership, Intentional Hospitality Personality, Harvey Stern, brings to life twenty-one concepts organized in a 7-7-7 framework, each representing the balance and rhythm of the Door Frame itself. The left side reflects growth and clarity of purpose. The top beam represents stakeholders, where alignment and collaboration take shape. The right side holds outcomes, where relevance and results endure. Together they form a model that strengthens professionals, teams, and organizations.Door Frame Playbook provides tools that build alignment in every environment, from onboarding and communication to trust, adversity, and personal readiness. Readers will discover memorable ideas, including Cultural Permission (the unwritten speed limit that shapes culture), The Three Lanes (how departments operate at different speeds and intensities), and Super Power (how everyone brings their defining strength to the work they do). Each chapter connects insight to action, offering a language readers can apply immediately to guide growth and sustain culture.By the final chapter, readers will not only understand the structure of the Door Frame but also begin to see Door Frames everywhere, in teams, in projects, and in themselves. The result is leadership that lasts, grounded in clarity, strengthened by collaboration, and defined by enduring outcomes.
The book begins by introducing Parmenides and his work in the context of Greek philosophy, the new medium of writing and Elea's position as a recently founded Greek colony. All aspects of Parmenides' poem are examined in the light of insights given by a variety of authors. This paves the way for a series of original insights made by the present author. This results in a new approach to Parmenides which emphasises the relevance of his philosophy for us today. Diagrams illustrate key points. At the end a loose and lively translation frees Parmenides' poem from the contexts in which it is so often stifled. Not herself a philosopher, Sappho's poems show that she did lead her life according to principles that imply some form of philosophy and her work stands as a shining example of a conception of truth that is integral to Parmenides but which is now long forgotten. After an introduction, Sappho and her conception of truth and beauty is articulated via a series of translations of the more extent surviving fragments.
