Almost as much is written in the soccer media about transfers as about the game itself. Records are smashed and billions spent each transfer window, but how does the transfer market work? How does a transfer come together? How do you become an agent, and what do they actually do? And what are the effects of a move on the main stakeholders? For years, transfer gossip columns have been Alan Gernon's guilty pleasure. Now, he explores how many of these rumors are accurate, planted by agents, or simply made up—and how easy is it to plant a transfer story in the media. Along the way, he discovers how the market works and how a transfer happens; what a move actually means for a typical player in a world where you could buy over 160,000 League Two players for the price of Neymar; and that almost 30% of transferred players worldwide are moved between clubs against their wishes. He also uncovers how to become a soccer agent overnight, and why British players are reluctant to move abroad. He speaks to players about the pressures and real-life effects of a move, and tries to figure out how much the stars of yesteryear would be worth in today's crazy transfer market—where Premier League clubs spent a record £1.4 billion in the summer of 2017 alone. In 1912 the young Frédéric-Louis Sauser arrived in France, carrying an experimental poem and a new identity: Blaise Cendrars was born. Over the next half-century, Cendrars wrote innovative poems, novels, essays, film scripts and autobiographical prose. His ground-breaking books and collaborations with artists such as Sonia Delaunay and Fernand Léger remain astonishingly modern today. Cendrarss writings reflect his insatiable curiosity, his vast knowledge, which was largely self-taught, and his love of everyday life. In this new account Eric Robertson examines Cendrarss work against a turbulent historical background and reassesses his contribution to twentieth-century literature. Cendrars is as relevant today as ever before, and deserves a wider readership in the English-speaking world. Autorid: Eric Robertson

The central contention of the New Atheism of Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens is that there has for several centuries been a war between science and religion, that religion has been steadily losing that war, and that at this point in human history a completely secular scientific account of the world has been worked out in such thorough and convincing detail that there is no longer any reason why a rational and educated person should find the claims of any religion the least bit worthy of attention. But as Edward Feser argues inThe Last Superstition, in fact there is not, and never has been, any war between science and religion at all. There has instead been a conflict between two entirely philosophical conceptions of the natural order: on the one hand, the classical teleological vision of Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, and Aquinas, on which purpose or goal-directedness is as inherent a feature of the physical world as mass or electric charge; and the modern mechanical vision of Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, and Hume, according to which the physical world is comprised of nothing more than purposeless, meaningless particles in motion. As it happens, on the classical teleological picture, the existence of God, the immortality of the soul, and the natural-law conception of morality are rationally unavoidable. Modern atheism and secularism have thus always crucially depended for their rational credentials on the insinuation that the modern, mechanical picture of the world has somehow been established by science. Yet this modern mechanical picture has never been established by science, and cannot be, for it is not a scientific theory in the first place but merely a philosophical interpretation of science. Moreover, as Feser shows, the philosophical arguments in its favor given by the early modern philosophers were notable only for being surprisingly weak. The true reasons for its popularity were then, and are now, primarily political: It was a tool by which the intellectual foundations of ecclesiastical authority could be undermined and the way opened toward a new secular and liberal social order oriented toward commerce and technology. So as to further these political ends, it was simply stipulated, by fiat as it were, that no theory inconsistent with the mechanical picture of the world would be allowed to count as scientific. As the centuries have worn on and historical memory has dimmed, this act of dogmatic stipulation has falsely come to be remembered as a discovery. However, not only is this modern philosophical picture rationally unfounded, it is demonstrably false. For the mechanical conception of the natural world, when worked out consistently, absurdly entails that rationality, and indeed the human mind itself, are illusory. The so-called scientific worldview championed by the New Atheists thus inevitably undermines its own rational foundations; and into the bargain (and contrary to the moralistic posturing of the New Atheists) it undermines the foundations of any possible morality as well. By contrast, and as The Last Superstition demonstrates, the classical teleological picture of nature can be seen to find powerful confirmation in developments from contemporary philosophy, biology, and physics; moreover, morality and reason itself cannot possibly be made sense of apart from it. The teleological vision of the ancients and medievals is thereby rationally vindicated and with it the religious worldview they based upon it. Autorid: Edward Feser

The amazing chronicle of a primate scientist's fifty-year journey studying baboonsand what her findings can tell us about primates, resilience, and human coexistence. In 1972, renowned anthropologist Shirley C. Strum traveled to Kenya to study the origins of human aggression through observing baboons. What Dr. Strum discovered completely defied her expectations, scientific notions about baboons, and even well-established assumptions about primate behavior writ large. In Echoes of Our Origins, Strum takes readers on an extraordinary fifty-year journey alongside baboons, creatures that transformed not just her scientific understanding, but also her perspective on life, people, nature, and evolution. Strum's groundbreaking research began when she embarked on fieldwork in Kenya. Observing the lives of these social creatures, Strum uncovered their unexpectedly complex strategies of negotiation, collaboration, and resilience in the face of adversity. From exploring the evolution of social bonds and trust in baboon societya common idea today but not thento confronting the consequences of human-wildlife conflict, Strum illustrates what it means to coexist with the natural world and question our role within it. With insights drawn from half a century of living among and studying baboons, Strum reflects on the delicate balance of nature and humanity, how science itself must evolve to see beyond its rigid frameworks, and how to think about evolution. This profound narrative challenges readers to look anew at not only baboons but also the very methods by which we understand the animal kingdomand ourselves. Equal parts natural history, adventure story, memoir, and call to action, Echoes of Our Origins will engage, enlighten, and contribute to the vital conversation about our natural world and how to ensure its survival. This exceptional graphic novel recounts the spiritual odyssey of philosopher Bertrand Russell. In his agonized search for absolute truth, Russell crosses paths with legendary thinkers like Gottlob Frege, David Hilbert, and Kurt Gödel, and finds a passionate student in the great Ludwig Wittgenstein. But his most ambitious goal-to establish unshakable logical foundations of mathematics-continues to loom before him. Through love and hate, peace and war, Russell persists in the dogged mission that threatens to claim both his career and his personal happiness, finally driving him to the brink of insanity. This story is at the same time a historical novel and an accessible explication of some of the biggest ideas of mathematics and modern philosophy. With rich characterizations and expressive, atmospheric artwork, the book spins the pursuit of these ideas into a highly satisfying tale. Probing and ingeniously layered, the book throws light on Russell's inner struggles while setting them in the context of the timeless questions he spent his life trying to answer. At its heart, Logicomix is a story about the conflict between an ideal rationality and the unchanging, flawed fabric of reality.

A powerful chronicle of Colombia’s descent into decades of civil war through the lens of an intimate, multi-generational tale of upheaval and betrayal. When presumed president-elect Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, champion of the working class and harbinger of a new era of progressive social change, is assassinated on the eve of Colombia’s 1948 presidential election, the capital is plunged into bloodshed. So begins a singularly brutal period of Colombia’s history known simply as la violencia—a bloody civil war that spawned decades of turmoil and splintered the country into ever-shifting factions. The Violence is an intimate history of this conflict—told not from the political center of the war but from the mountainous finca that Adriana E. Ramírez’s family tended to for generations, and through the eyes of her formidable grandmother, Esther. With startling lyricism, Ramírez illuminates the specter of violence—from guerilla warfare to the brutalities found so often in romantic relationships to the spontaneous and senseless violence steeped into everyday Colombian life during this period—and the threat that it poses to a country, and a family, that is trying to stay whole. Gracefully braiding together macrohistory, family history, and personal narrative, Adriana E. Ramírez traces these parallel stories of upheaval in a sweeping portrait of a country and family in flux.
