After another long day of charging, Blutch and Chesterfield make the acquaintance of Matthew Brady, a professional photographer dispatched by President Lincoln to document the ongoing historic struggle. Photography, still a new invention, together with Brady's talent for capturing the moment, are met with great enthusiasm by both the rank and file and the top brass. Inevitably, it's not long before Blutch and Chesterfield are ordered to act as the artist's protective detail - much to the sergeant's disgust... Autorid: Raoul Cauvin
Kunagi oli baltisakslastel ütlus: kes pole külastanud mõnd Balti pastoraati, see ei tunne ka baltisaksa elulaadi! Selles raamatus avanebki meie ees ühe 19. sajandi keskpaiga Eestimaa pastoraadi argipäev koos pastoripere suhtumiste ja hoiakutega, mille valgusel saame juurelda, kuivõrd see ütlus tõele võiks vastata.
Few subjects in European welfare history attract as much attention as the nineteenth-century English and Welsh New Poor Law. Its founding statute was considered the single most important piece of social legislation ever enacted, and at the same time, the coming of its institutions from penny-pinching Boards of Guardians to the dreaded workhouse has generally been viewed as a catastrophe for ordinary working people. Until now it has been impossible to know how the poor themselves felt about the New Poor Law and its measures, how they negotiated its terms, and how their interactions with the local and national state shifted and changed across the nineteenth century. In Their Own Write exposes this hidden history. Based on an unparalleled collection of first-hand testimony pauper letters and witness statements interwoven with letters to newspapers and correspondence from poor law officials and advocates the book reveals lives marked by hardship, deprivation, bureaucratic intransigence, parsimonious officialdom, and sometimes institutional cruelty, while also challenging the dominant view that the poor were powerless and lacked agency in these interactions. The testimonies collected in these pages clearly demonstrate that both the poor and their advocates were adept at navigating the new bureaucracy, holding local and national officials to account, and influencing the outcomes of relief negotiations for themselves and their communities. Fascinating and compelling, the stories presented in In Their Own Write amount to nothing less than a new history of welfare from below. Until now it has been impossible to know how the poor themselves negotiated the New Poor Law and its measures, and how their interactions with the state shifted and changed across the nineteenth century. Based on first-hand testimony pauper letters and witness statements interwoven with letters to newspapers and correspondence from poor law officials and advocates In Their Own Write exposes this hidden history. In 1955 seventy-four original plasters recording sculptures by Edgar Degas (18341917) were moved to the old Valsuani foundry in Paris only to reappear in France in 2004. These plasters are now being published for the first time, presenting new documentary and physical evidence regarding their dating following an in-depth analysis into the condition of Degass waxes at the time of his death. Technical and documentary evidence now proves that as many as half of the serialised Hébrard Degas bronzes now held in museum and private collections around the world were in fact cast at the Valsuani foundry in the 1950s and 1960s - long after the Hébrard foundry closed in 1935/36. All of the now cleaned 74 Degas plasters are recorded in full colour illustrations. The detailed appendix, which can be accessed via a QR code, provides additional information on the objects and is designed as a scholarly catalogue raisonné. Autorid: Gregory Hedberg
This book shines a light on the neglected work of French artist Léon Bonvin. This beautiful publication presents a catalog raisonné of Léon Bonvin's work published in both French and English. Introduced by several illuminating essays and accompanying an exhibition at the Fondation Custodia, this book enriches our understanding of the previously overlooked, yet immensely talented, French artist. Léon Bonvin never enjoyed the same notoriety as his half-brother, Francois (181787), who was a well-regarded realist painter in the nineteenth century. The few remaining sources characterize him as misunderstood and ill-fated. As he was struggling to make a living, Bonvin took over his father's inn in Vaugirard, while continuing to paint watercolors. His work, depicting wildflowers, still lifes, and views of the still rural and working-class plain exhibit a deep sincerity. Presenting new research on the life and art of Bonvin, this book documents all known works by the artist, including many drawings that have never been published before. Together, the essays and comprehensive presentation of his works provide an essential foundation for building an appreciation of Bonvin's magnificent oeuvre.
