These intimate, visceral and often wickedly funny poems journey through the darker days of new parenthood, teasing out the anxieties which plague us when night falls. Violence against women, the destruction of our environment, the poisons and pitfalls of 21st-century living are explored here in poems by turns lyrical and earthy, yearning and angry. They mine gold from the darkness and seek luminescence in the deepest oceans. Pit Lullabies is Jessica Traynors third collection, following Liffey Swim (2014) and The Quick (2019) from Irelands Dedalus Press, and is a Poetry Book Society Recommendation. Roger Bushell was 'Big X', mastermind of the mass breakout from Stalag Luft III in March 1944, immortalised in the Hollywood film The Great Escape.Very little was known about Bushell until 2011, when his family donated his private papers - a treasure trove of letters, photographs and diaries - to the Imperial War Museum. Through exclusive access to this material - as well as fascinating new research from other sources - Simon Pearson, Chief Night Editor of The Times, has now written the first biography of this iconic figure. Born in South Africa in 1910, Roger Bushell was the son of a British mining engineer. By the age of 29, this charismatic character who spoke nine languages had become a London barrister with a reputation for successfully defending those much less fortunate than him. He was also renowned as an international ski champion and fighter pilot with a string of glamorous girlfriends. On 23 May, 1940, his Spitfire was shot down during a dogfight over Boulogne after destroying two German fighters. From then on his life was governed by an unquenchable desire to escape from Occupied Europe.Over the next four years he made three escapes, coming within 100 yards of the Swiss border during his first attempt. His second escape took him to Prague where he was sheltered by the Czech resistance for eight months before he was captured. The three months of savage interrogation in Berlin by the Gestapo that followed made him even more determined. Prisoner or not, he would do his utmost to fight the Nazis. His third (and last escape) destabilised the Nazi leadership and captured the imagination of the world. He died on 29 March 1944, murdered on the explicit instructions of Adolf Hitler.Simon Pearson's revealing biography is a vivid account of war and love, triumph and tragedy - one man's attempt to challenge remorseless tyranny in the face of impossible odds. What do the attacks in London Bridge, Manchester and Westminster have in common with those at the Charlie Hebdo offices, the Finsbury Park Mosque attack and multiple US shootings? They were all carried out by men with histories of domestic violence. TERRORISM BEGINS AT HOME. Terrorism is seen as a special category of crime that has blinded us to the obvious - that it is, almost always, male violence. The extraordinary link between so many tragic recent attacks is that the perpetrators have practised in private before their public outbursts. In these searing case studies, Joan Smith, feminist and human rights campaigner, makes a compelling and persuasive argument for a radical shift in perspective. Incomprehensible ideology is transformed through her clear-eyed research into a disturbing but familiar pattern. From the Manchester bomber to the Charlie Hebdo attackers, from angry white men to the Bethnal Green girls, from US school shootings to the London gang members who joined ISIS, Joan Smith shows that, time and time again, misogyny, trauma and abuse lurk beneath the rationalizations of religion or politics. Until Smith pointed it out in 2017, criminal authorities missed this connection because violence against women is dangerously normalised. Yet, since domestic abuse often comes before a public attack, it's here a solution to the scourge of our age might be found. Thought-provoking and essential, Home-Grown will lift the veil on a revelatory truth. Autorid: Joan Smith
An inspiring testament to a star whose light endures... Sharon Tate: Every Picture Tells Her Story is a visually rich, deeply personal tribute to the late Sharon Tate, crafted by devoted collector Tom Fontaine. Far more than a collection of artifacts, this book offers a heartfelt celebration of Tate's life, legacy, and timeless appeal-shining a long-overdue spotlight on the woman behind Hollywood's tragic narrative. This meticulously documented volume begins with the author's personal connection: discovering Sharon Tate through his father's admiration. Readers will be instantly engaged by the sincere lens of a lifelong fan who grew up during Tate's meteoric rise and tragic loss. Through anecdotes, interviews, and rare memorabilia, Fontaine crafts an intimate portrait, reviving Tate's star power for new generations. Follow Tate's journey from childhood pageant queen and "military brat" to celebrated actress, model, and pop culture icon. Fontaine devotes chapters to her formative years, early acting struggles, breakthrough roles in films like "Valley of the Dolls," and her high-profile relationships with Jay Sebring and Roman Polanski. He dispels myths, sharing her athletic, academic, and artistic achievements, and illuminates Tate's humility, relatability, and ambition-traits often overshadowed by sensationalist media accounts. A parade of film stills, letters, scripts, and personal belongings immerse the reader in Tate's world. The author's collection, including exclusive behind-the-scenes artifacts and candid photographs, offers insights unavailable in typical biographies, making this book an essential read for film buffs and fans. Fontaine's account reframes Tate's legacy, moving it away from her infamous fate and focusing on her achievements, talent, and enduring influence on fashion, film, and culture. His persuasive argument is clear: Sharon Tate was not just a beautiful face or a victim of tragic circumstance, but a dynamic, intelligent, and trailblazing figure deserving of recognition and celebration. Whether you are a passionate admirer of Sharon Tate or a newcomer to her legacy, this is a compelling, emotionally resonant invitation to see her life in full.
