Batsford Garden Voices: A year of gardeners writing
Uus!
GTIN: 9781837330386 Raamatud
A fascinating celebration of our love for all things horticultural, with a selection of garden-related entries from diaries, letters, and articles for every day of the year.Garden Voices captures the past and present of gardening with dated, daily musings organized around the calendar year, bringing gardening and gardeners to life like never before. In this engaging anthology, readers are transported back in time—and often place—to witness rare horticultural glimpses. We find George Orwell, half-naked, digging his newly acquired rock-filled, “dry as a bone” garden on the Isle of Jura on May 25, 1946. On September 25, 1845, Emily Dickinson picks the last flowers of summer before Jack Frost gets them. In New Mexico, Georgia O’Keeffe reveals to her New York–based lover Alfred Stieglitz that she has just discovered the joy of gardening. Key figures – from Samuel Pepys to Charles Darwin and Sigmund Freud, QueenVictoria to Virginia Woolf and Germaine Greer – feature alongside much-lovedgardeners, such as Gertrude Jekyll, Margery Fish and Claude Monet, as well aslesser-known but no-less inspiring garden writers, including Eleanor Vere Boyleand Celia Thaxter, whose writing will be a revelation to many.Whether tinged with emotion or filled with character and humor, strikingly evocative or thought-provoking, these daily thoughts remind us that gardeners are all connected by a timeless invisible thread. With several selections for each day, from January 1 to December 31, this book is a true celebration of horticulture, and is the perfect gift for the gardener or garden lover in your life. Garden Voices brings joy, comfort, a gladdening sense of affinity, and—much like gardening itself—moments of awe and inspiration. Autorid: Claire Masset

Chronicle Books Vanishing Sea: The Tale of How the Aral Sea Became the Aral Desert
Uus!
GTIN: 9781797224596 Raamatud
This artful and thought-provoking picture book shares the little-known story of the disappearance of the Aral Sea—and the loss of livelihood and biodiversity as fishing villages and ships were left stranded in the desert without water. The Aral Sea once stretched across modern-day Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. A large saltwater lake of Central Asia (called “sea” because of its vastness), the Aral Sea’s 26 square miles (67 square kilometers) sustained its surrounding communities for generations. Beginning in the 1960s, aggressive Soviet industrialization diverted water for agricultural production and caused the lake to shrink. Today, the waters that had thrived for centuries have almost entirely disappeared—and along with them, the biodiversity of the lake, its thriving fishing industry, and the many homes along its shores. Told in a folkloric style with stunning illustrations, this true tale chronicles what happens when nature’s generosity is exploited. It gently invites readers to consider the reality of irreversible environmental harm, its global impact, and what it means to be compassionate to the land we live on.TIMELY THEMES: This book showcases lessons of community effort and perseverance, addressing important themes about the environment, biodiversity, water access, the impact of colonization, and the effects of industry and agriculture. LITTLE-KNOWN STORY: Few Central Asian stories like this are familiar to American and European readers, and very little has been published about the Aral Sea outside of Russia. This captivating picture book brings its important story to the world. FAR-REACHING IMPACT: The disappearance of the Aral Sea has a global impact: the effects have been documented as far away as Scandinavia and Antarctica, and toxic soils from the damaged Aral Sea basin are being carried by winds to the far corners of the planet. This story offers readers a chance to learn about the loss of a critical resource and reassess what it means to be environmentally aware, both locally and globally.Perfect for: Young readers who love nature and fact books Educators, librarians, and parents seeking engaging geography and natural science books for kids Anyone looking for stories featuring an environmental call to action A resource for talking about the impact of colonialism, industrialization, and underrepresented regions of the world Fans of Dinara Mirtalipova's art Autorid: Dinara Mirtalipova

Helion & Company Campaign on the Loire, 1870-1871: Orleans and Le Mans
Uus!
GTIN: 9781804517826 Raamatud
A vivid account of the Loire campaign during the Franco-Prussian War, highlighting fierce winter battles, leadership struggles, and the climactic clash at Le Mans that tested both French and German forces to their limits. The campaign on the Loire was in many ways the most dramatic, and most important, of the campaigns of the German army during the winter of 1870–1871. It was fought for the most part in dreadful weather conditions which subjected its participants to extremes of physical hardship. The culmination of the campaign was the battle of Le Mans, which tested the armies on both sides to an even greater extent than the months which had gone before. For the French, the indomitable Alfred Chanzy was by some way the ablest of their generals; notwithstanding the series of defeats sustained by his 2nd Army of the Loire, he never gave up. Less fortunate was General Claude d’Aurelle de Paladines, whose tenure in command of the Army of the Loire was marked by the abominable mistreatment which he suffered at the hands of Charles de Freycinet, the ‘delegate’ appointed by Leon Gambetta to support him in carrying out his duties as Minister of War.The author has previously examined two of the other campaigns directed to the relief of the capital. In The Somme, 1870–1871: The Winter Campaign in Picardy, he traced the campaign of the Army of the North, under General Louis Faidherbe, which ended in failure at St Quentin on 19 January 1871.The second of these relief campaigns was mounted from the south-east of France, by the Army of the East, led by General Charles-Denis Bourbaki. After defeat at the battle of the Lisaine on 16–18 January by the German Corps led by General August von Werder, Bourbaki was compelled by the advancing Sudarmee under General Edwin von Manteuffel to retreat into Switzerland, and surrendered there. The author described this campaign in The Last Throw of the Dice: Bourbaki and Werder in Eastern France 1870–1871. Autorid: Quintin Barry

GTIN: 9783791394190 Raamatud
This revelatory volume uncovers the significant friendship that shaped Egon Schieles most personal and provocative works. Between 1910 and his death in 1918, Egon Schiele cultivated a close, formative relationship with Dr. Erwin von Graffa Vienna-based gynecologist who would become both friend and collaborator. Egon Schiele: Portrait of Dr. Erwin von Graff is the first publication to examine this vital connection in depth, revealing how Graffs medical practice and personal support influenced one of the most expressive and psychologically charged bodies of work in modern art. Through Graffs private diary and newly uncovered archival material, art historian Elisabeth Dutz traces a compelling narrative of creative exchange and trust. Graff granted Schiele access to his patientspregnant women, newborns, and postpartum mothersopening a world that Schiele captured with raw, emotional intensity. Their friendship, which began with a painted portrait offered in gratitude for a favor, evolved into a lasting exchange that deeply influenced Schieles exploration of the human body, emotional vulnerability, and the complexities of life and death. Published in connection with a special exhibition at the Neue Galerie New York, this beautifully produced volume is richly illustrated with Schieles works from this period, as well as never-before-seen photographs and documents. It offers new insight into the artists inner world and illuminates a significant chapter in his development. A must-have for admirers of Schiele, this book deepens our understanding of his oeuvre and the relationships that helped shape it. Autorid: Elisabeth Dutz

A classic Batsford poetry collection, now reissued with a stunning new cover.A Nature Poem for Every Day of the Year is a glorious collection of 366 poems that celebrate nature and the changing seasons. It is the perfect morning companion for any nature or poetry enthusiast, featuring famous odes from big-name poets alongside unsung poems from less well-known writers. Each poem is chosen to chime with the natural world through the seasons. Spring is a time of hope, a season of new life accompanied by William Wordsworth’s famous daffodils, John Clare’s lambs and Christina Rossetti’s birdsong. Summer shifts into a time of leisure, with long, idyllic holidays in the countryside: according to Henry James, the two most beautiful words in the English Language were ‘summer afternoon’, a sentiment echoed by Edward Thomas and Emily Dickinson. John Keats, William Blake and W. H. Auden are the poets we associate with autumn, with the natural world, and the human one, holding onto the last lingering memories of summer before they turn to face the oncoming hardships of winter. Amy Lowell and George Meredith perfectly frame this time of year, with their silver-fringed leaves and crimson berries. Winter can be savoured in poetry, rather than endured; bleak grey days are transformed into a world of glittering frost and snow-blanketed landscapes. Even in the darkest days life continues, and soon wecan turn our attention to the rebirth of spring.A wonderful collection of poems that help mark the daily turn of the seasons and all the rituals marking the significant moments of the year, from Candlemas to Christmas.A beautifully produced book of 365 nature poems, celebrating the changing seasons Featuring odes from John Keats, Emily Dickinson, William Wordsworth among other famous and less-well-known poetsCelebrates seasons and the significant moments of the year, from Candlemas to Christmas A new life for an enduring, well-loved Batsford poetry collection, with a new cover and design. Childress shows us how Shiva, also known as Shankar, was the main deity of a collection of Hindu Shivites who ranged across continents and oceans. They sought after gold and other metals, jade, obsidian, granite, diamonds and other gems. These Shiva worshippers came from across the Indian subcontinent, Tibet, Turkey, and the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Pacific Islands, Mexico, Central America, Colombia, Peru, Madagascar, and other areas. They had huge fleets of oceangoing ships that traversed the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Batsford High-Tech Britain: Buildings of the Space Age
Uus!
GTIN: 9781837330379 Raamatud
A showcase of Britains most astonishing examples of High-Tech buildings from the late twentieth century and beyond. Like the Lotus Esprit, the Atari home computer and the sounds of the Roland TR-808 drum machine, the glossy colour, clip-on components and bristling silhouettes of High-Tech architecture provide a polaroid snapshot of 1980s modernity. High-Tech was an international style forged in Britain, taking inspiration from Victorian engineering and science fiction alike. Geraint Franklin traces its trajectory from 1960s radicalism to the global mainstream, taking in such late 20th-century landmarks as the Lloyds building, the Sainsbury Centre, the Schlumberger Cambridge Research Centre and the Eden Project in Cornwall. High-Tech Britain revisits the work of the big four practices of Norman Foster, Richard Rogers, Michael and Patty Hopkins and Nicolas Grimshaw. From their teams emerged a younger generation of designers including Eva Jiiná, Ian Ritchie, Richard Horden and Jan Kaplický who took the language in new directions. Alongside are profiled lesser-known stories such as the Patera kit building quietly rusting in Londons Docklands and the workshop at Hooke Park, Dorset, engineered from waste wood. Illustrated with new photography by John East, High-Tech Britain is an authoritative survey of the most groundbreaking examples of this extraordinary moment in British architecture. An essential guide to the big, shiny style that ruled modern Britain. Rowan Moore How did buildings as bright and light as 8-bit computer games and eighties sports cars come to dominate our urban landscape? Geraint Franklin tells a fast-paced design story beside John East's glorious images, full of fun palaces, floating canopies and facades of gleaming perfection. John Grindrod This is a book that is about more than nostalgia. It reminds us that there was a time when the future of architecture was full of possibilities. Deyan Sudjic Geraint Franklin deftly summarises the architectural and engineering revolution of high-tech, exploring its roots, and setting its British-designed examples in a global context. He explains its 21st century transition into an ecologically aware movement that remains true to its original fascination with unconventional materials and kit-of-parts construction. Hugh Pearman High-Tech is that most British of architectural fetishes, a collision of Victorian engineering and comic strip sci-fi, it was the UK's major contribution to modernism. This survey takes in the whole range of High Tech, from trad to rad, a wonderful homage to a period still surprisingly fragile and endangered. GTIN: 9781324123514 Raamatud
In this lively and entertaining work, Witold Rybczynski tells the story of the most distinctive cars in history and the artists, engineers, dreamers and gearheads who created them. Delving into more than 170 years of ingenuity in design, technology and engineering, he takes us from Carl Benzs three-wheel motorcar in 1855 to the present-day shift to electric cars. Along the way, he looks at the emergence of mass production with Henry Fords Model T; the Golden Age of American car design; postwar European subcompacts; and the long tradition of the elegant sports car. Rybczynski explores how cars have been reflections of national character (the charming Italian Fiat Cinquecento), icons of a subculture (the VW bus for American hippies) and even emblems of an era (the practical Chrysler minivan). He explains key developments in automotive technology, bringing to light how the modern automobile is the result of more than a century of trial and error. And he weaves in charming accounts of the many cars hes owned and driven, starting with his firsta Volkswagen Beetle. The Driving Machine is a breezy and fascinating history of design, illustrated with the authors delightful drawings. Autorid: Witold Rybczynski

Wong overturn more than a century of scientific canon, arguing that there must be a second arrow of timea heretofore missing law of nature that explains how the marvellously complex constituents of our universe came to be. Evolution, they boldly propose, is a universal phenomenonnot only in biology, but in the entire atomic, chemical, mineral and physical universe. Showing how a natural process of selection for increasing function has shaped the universe since its inception, they explore how this new law could possibly help us identify life on other planets andperhapseven understand the purpose and meaning of life on Earth in a new way.
