Taylor & Francis Ltd Regression Analysis: A Practical Introduction 3rd edition Uus! GTIN: 9781041002598 Raamatud This thoroughly practical and engaging textbook conveys the skills needed to responsibly develop, conduct, scrutinize, and interpret statistical analyses without requiring high-level math. Rather than focusing on complicated equations, the book describes these biases visually and with examples of situations in which they could arise. This thoroughly practical and engaging textbook conveys the skills needed to responsibly develop, conduct, scrutinize, and interpret statistical analyses, without requiring any high-level math.Regression Analysis details the most common sources of statistical biases, including some not covered in other textbooks. Rather than focusing on complicated equations, the book describes these biases visually and with examples of situations in which they could arise. As the author argues, just learning how to conduct regressions without learning how to properly assess and interpret regressions can do more harm than good. Other unique features include an innovative approach to describing the elusive concept of "holding other factors constant" and proper interpretations of the strength of evidence in light of the Bayesian critique of hypothesis testing. This third edition enhances the emphasis on ethical and responsible research practices and creates more examples demonstrating how the biases and their corrections could affect the regression results. This is the textbook the author wishes he had learned from, as it would have helped him avoid many research mistakes he made in his career at research organizations and in academia. It is ideal for undergraduate and postgraduate students learning quantitative methods in the social sciences, business, medicine, and data analytics. It will also appeal to researchers and academics looking to better understand regressions. | 1 | 59,49 € | Vaata

Taylor & Francis Ltd Curious Public Administrator Uus! GTIN: 9781032668819 Raamatud This book is rooted in the notion that public administrators must practice insatiable curiosity to be effective, fair, and democratic. Curiosity encourages public administrators to seek answers in a caring manner, and in doing so empathize with the communities that they serve. Louis Brownlow, one of public administrations historical thinkers, once argued, (T]he principal requirement of a good administrator is an insatiable curiosity. This book is rooted in the notion that public administrators must practice insatiable curiosity to be effective, fair, and democratic. By seeking to uncover how the world works, and therefore practicing curiosity, public administrators may be more likely to move toward evidence-based decisions, improving the efficacy and efficiency of public service. Curiosity encourages public administrators to seek answers in a caring manner and, in doing so, to empathize with the communities that they serve.First, the book incorporates the concept of curiosity into the field of public administration. Scholarship in philosophy, business administration, social science, and other scholarly fields addresses curiosity, but public administration has yet to examine this concept in detail. This book fills that hole in the literature. Second, the book presents novel primary data on curiosity in public agencies by examining curious organizations and surveying local government officers. Third, the book presents novel primary data on how public affairs faculty view curiosity and incorporate the concept in their research and the classroom. Lastly, author William Hatcher integrates this information in the books final chapter to present a model of administrative curiosity, focusing on creating a guide for future research and teaching. Thus, this book serves as a roadmap for developing a new doctrine of curiosity in public administration theory and practice, and it will be of enormous interest to students enrolled in public affairs courses as well as practicing public administrators and nonprofit managers. | 1 | 32,49 € | Vaata
Taylor & Francis Ltd Playing with Scripture: Reading Contested Biblical Texts with Gadamer and Genre Theory Uus! GTIN: 9781032646572 Raamatud This book puts a creative new reading of Hans-Georg Gadamers philosophical hermeneutics and literary genre theory to work on the problem of Scripture. Reading texts as Scripture brings two hermeneutical assumptions into tension: that the text will continually say something new and relevant to the present situation, and that the text has stability and authority over readers. Given how contested the Bibles meaning is, how is it possible to read Scripture as authoritative and relevant? Rather than anchor meaning in author, text or reader, Gadamers phenomenological model of hermeneutical experience as Spiel (play) offers a dynamic, intersubjective account of how understanding happens, avoiding the dead end of the subjectiveobjective dichotomy. Modern genre theory addresses some of the criticisms of Gadamer, accounting for the different roles played by readers in different genres using the new term Lesespiel (reading game). This is tested in three case studies of contested texts: the recontextualization of psalms in the book of Acts, the use of Hagars story (Genesis 16) in nineteenth-century debates over slavery and the troubling reception history of the rape and murder in Gibeah (Judges 19). In each study, the application of ancient text to contemporary situation is neither arbitrary, nor slavishly bound to tradition, but playful. This book puts a creative new reading of Hans-Georg Gadamers philosophical hermeneutics and literary genre theory to work on the problem of Scripture. | 1 | 60,84 € | Vaata

GTIN: 9781032632834 Raamatud This book addresses the current crisis of democratic politics and its phase of interregnum in which the past finds it hard to die and the future finds it difficult to be born by proposing a radical redefinition of the concept of the Political.Drawing on the thoughts of Antonio Gramsci and Walter Benjamin among others, it explores the meaning of the lemma auctoritas the opposition between authority and power and offers a comparison of the Frankfurt Schools radical critique of power with Georges Batailles critique of political economy and consumerist productivism, demonstrating how the two ultimately converge. Taylor & Francis Ltd British Methodist Revivalism and the Eclipse of Ecclesiology Uus! GTIN: 9781032123912 Raamatud This book demonstrates how the revivalist variant of Methodist spirituality and theology empowered its adherents and helped foster new movements, even as it undermined the Spirits work through the structures of the church. Revivalism was one of the main causes of division in nineteenth-century British Methodism, but the role of revivalist theology in these splits has received scant scholarly attention. In this book, James E. Pedlar demonstrates how the revivalist variant of Methodist spirituality and theology empowered its adherents and helped foster new movements, even as it undermined the Spirits work through the structures of the church. Beginning with an examination of unresolved issues in John Wesleys ecclesiology, Pedlar identifies a trend of increasing marginalisation of the church among revivalists, via an examination of three key figures: Hugh Bourne (17721852), James Caughey (18101891), and William Booth (18601932). He concludes by examining the more catholic and irenic theology of Samuel Chadwick (18601932), the leading Methodist revivalist of the early twentieth century who became a strong advocate of Methodist Union. Pedlar shows that these theological differences must be considered, alongside social and political factors, in any well-rounded assessment of the division and eventual reunification of British Methodism. | 1 | 60,84 € | Vaata

GTIN: 9781032606668 Raamatud Colonial and Post-Colonial Identity Politics in South Asia analyses the colonial and post-colonial documentation and caste classification among Muslims in India, demonstrating that religion negotiated with regional social customs and local social practices while at the same time fostering a shared religious belief. The central question addressed in this book is how different castes assert their identity for classification and how castes encountered colonial documentation. Identifying the colonial context of the documentation of castes among Muslims, and relying on colonial documentation in various census reports, gazetteers, government or police records, ethnographic studies, and travelogues, the author demonstrates the sheer diversity of attempts and castes among Muslims. The book deconstructs how under Colonialism Muslims were categorised into three broad but overlapping categories Ashraf, Ajlafs, and Arzals and that Muslims were categorised into Asiatic, Non-Asiatic, Foreign, Mixed, and Hindustani Muslim categories. It argues that few colonial theories applied to Muslims. Finally, the author explores post-colonial documentation of castes among Muslims in various Commission reports, particularly in Backward class commission reports and its interplay in the reservation politics of the contemporary period and examines the growth of various Muslim caste organisations in different parts of India and their role in identity politics.Providing a new perspective on the issue of minorities in India, this book will be of interest to scholars of religion, Islam, history, politics, and sociology of India. The chapters examine the virtuous and vicious ways in which we relate to those close to us. This volume gathers essays from leading scholars to discuss partiality in ethics. The chapters examine the virtuous and vicious ways in which we relate to those close to us.There has long been a puzzle in ethics concerning the balance between our general moral obligations to everyone and our specific moral obligations to a smaller subset of people: our family, our nation, and our friends. There has been longstanding tension between the moral intuition that equality entails that we have the same moral duties to everyone and the moral intuition that special obligations entail that we have much greater duties to those close to us. The chapters in this volume discuss varying perspectives on partiality within a wide range of relationships. Section 1 offers overarching visions of partiality. Section 2 examines how roles and relationships might shape partiality. Section 3 focuses on the potential moral dangers and pitfalls of partiality. Finally, Section 4 looks at specific applications of partiality expressed as our loyalty to country, religion, sports teams, and employers.Virtuous and Vicious Expressions of Partiality will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working in ethics, social and political philosophy, and philosophy of religion. | 1 | 60,84 € | Vaata
Taylor & Francis Ltd Digital Platforms and the Global South: Reconfiguring Power Relations in the Cultural Industries Uus! GTIN: 9781032489933 Raamatud This book addresses the issues raised by digital platforms in the Global South, with an emphasis on the cultural stakes involved. It brings together an interdisciplinary team of researchers including political economists, socio-economists, geographers, media sociologists or anthropologists who each explore these issues through an insightful case study at a local, national, regional or international scale. While studying the strategies of some of the main US-based Big Tech platforms or video streaming platforms towards the Global South, the chapters also consider the often-neglected active role local or regional actors play in the expansion of those Western digital players, and highlight the existence of a constellation of local or regional platforms that have emerged in Africa, Asia, Latin America or the Middle East. In addition to analysing the complex relationships of competition, collaboration or dependence between these diverse actors, this volume examines the ways in which the rise of these digital platforms has generated new forms of cultural entrepreneurship and participated in the reconfiguring of the conditions in which cultural contents are produced and circulated in the Global South. This volume will appeal to readers interested in the transnationalisation of cultural industries or in the social, political, economic, cultural and geopolitical dimensions of digital transformations and will be an important resource for students, teachers and researchers in media, communication, cultural studies, international relations and area studies programmes. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons (Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND)] 4.0 license. Kende not only refutes the originally anti-Communist myth of the systemic nature of (state) socialism, but tries to re-, and deconstruct the origins of this myth. Class War or Race War is more than an anti-thesis of the master narrative regarding the Soviet state antisemitism. Kende not only refutes the originally anti-Communist myth of the systemic nature of (state) socialism, but tries to re-, and deconstruct, the origins of this myth. With intensive use of historical documents, memoirs and the related historiography, the book attempts to make historical sense from the myth it intends to refute. Kende goes beyond the contemporary perceptions of the Jewish question and antisemitism, and with close reading of original documents, reconstructs the real frontlines of the Soviet society of the 1940s, which were not constructed along identity-political lines. The book reinvests the long-forgotten understanding of social classes in an allegedly classless and monolithic society. The spontaneous formations of the actual frontlines in the hinterland, or on the actual fronts (battlefields, in the Red Army) lacked the participants class consciousness, thus its occurrences in the form of conflict producing historical records were recorded as acts of antisemitism. As the book advocates, Jews could have been found on both sides of the inner frontlines of Soviet society during and right after WWII.An insightful read for scholars of Soviet history that presents a bold and challenging interpretation of the regime and its flawsboth perceived and real. | 1 | 60,84 € | Vaata

GTIN: 9781032543246 Raamatud "Kurdistan is among the world's most notorious cases of self-determination denied, and why this outcome remains unachieved reveals as much about the biases of international law as it does about the merits of the case for Kurdistan. On the centenary of the Treaty of Lausanne, 24 July 1923, the last of the international instruments establishing the new international order after WWI, this book explores the potential blind spots of international law regarding its differential application in the Middle East. It not only tells us a good deal about the Royal Navy of the time but also provides a general theory of why navies decline and what can be done to rejuvenate them. Taylor & Francis Ltd Toxic Masculinity on the London Stage, 16001610 Uus! GTIN: 9781032890449 Raamatud The idea of toxic masculinity might feel like a very modern, even twenty-first-century notion, but similar concerns about male behaviour, also often characterised in terms of poisons and poisoning, can be identified in the literature of four hundred years ago, not only in Shakespeares Othello and The Winters Tale but also lesser-known plays that were popular on the London stage in the 1600s. Poison-related tropes, and the recurrent plot device of a man trying to poison a woman, expressed complex and sometimes contradictory attitudes towards socially unacceptable male behaviour. These plays depict the early modern male as both poisoned and poisoner poisoned by inherited misogynistic ideas and attitudes, and poisoner of women both literally and metaphorically. Seeing them as enacting problematic situations and raising difficult questions rather than simply offering the moral certitudes of Christianity or the prescriptions of contemporary conduct book, the book points to these plays as evidence of disquiet and anxieties to which we can still easily relate today. The fact that some plays responded to real life events such as familicide is an indicator of this socially responsible role of the theatre, engaging its audience in current issues and controversies. The use of the poison theme in relation to male violence and misogyny shows that the early modern theatre was engaging with such intractable problems in ways that are still thought-provoking today. This volume discusses plays which depict the early modern male as both poisoned and poisoner - this book points to these plays as evidence of disquiet and anxieties to which we can still easily relate today. | 1 | 74,34 € | Vaata

This book examines two large and highly controversial urban infill projects in two peripheral European capitals - Tirana and Helsinki - through the lens of dramaturgy and political theatre. The authors argue that the planning processes in both cities have been farcical, following the so-called disillusionment arc in storytelling - that is, coming to terms with the inevitability of private developments where vast sums of money are at stake and power does not rest with the people. Beyond these cases studies, the book introduces the concept of planning distortion which blends socio-institutional phenomena such as corruption, neoliberalism, and undemocratization. Explaining that the black curatorial lens was used in the process of establishing counter-archives, the author also demonstrates that it has played - and continues to play - a vital role in the decolonization of museums.Offering compelling ways to look at the relationship between black curators and legacies of colonialism in museums, The Black Curator will be essential reading for scholars, students and museum practitioners. GTIN: 9781032448305 Raamatud This book explores South Korean university students perceptions of the English-Medium Instruction (EMI) courses they have taken. It specifically examines how the interplay of linguistic capital and trust shapes their EMI experiences. In South Korea, the implementation of neoliberal EMI policies, driven by a 'top-down' approach, has failed to adequately address the linguistic challenges faced by stakeholders. The setting for the book is a research-intensive university, where data were collected from ten Engineering and Business students through semi-structured interviews and analysed using Constructivist Grounded Theory (CGT), enabling a grounded understanding of the students perceptions. The areas investigated are students perceptions of their past experiences, of their access to subject content, and of how interactions take shape in their EMI experiences. Emerging from the analysis is a dynamic between trust and linguistic capital which has been shaped by the past and which affects the future, leading to epistemic outcomes. The results indicate that monolingually-framed trust in situated-linguistic codes plays a role in the students EMI experiences, and from this Situated-Linguistic Capital Theory emerges. The theory indicates that monolingually-framed trust reinforces binary choices, in particular EMI situations, of using either the L1 or the L2 system which can lead to potential epistemic outcomes. The book concludes with a discussion of the factors that can determine the future success of EMI in South Korea. This volume will be of interest to researchers and postgraduate students examining English Medium Instruction and its success in different higher education contexts. Taylor & Francis Ltd Theory of Metaphor: Truth, Falsity, and the Uncanny Uus! GTIN: 9781032909004 Raamatud A Theory of Metaphor: Truth, Falsity, and the Uncanny is a strikingly original analysis of metaphor. Scholarly and imaginative, this sophisticated theory builds on a simple definition: metaphors are not comparisons but statements of identity (A is B), statements simultaneously true and false. Bogel explores a broad range of literary theory and philosophy: from Aristotle to iek, Augustine to Wittgenstein, Richards to Ricoeur and Blumenberg. The book analyzes a wide variety of literary and non-literary texts, including popular forms such as graveyard epitaphs, sermons, cartoons (Garry Trudeau's Doonesbury), and a haunting episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It extends the central concept of truth and falsity to the reader's encounter with metaphor, figural interpretation of scripture, entire poems as metaphors, the aesthetics of obliquity and textual impurity, and Freudian psychoanalysisin particular, links between metaphor and the uncanny. This rigorously and eloquently argued book will be invaluable to students of metaphor across such fields as literary criticism and theory, philosophy, linguistics, rhetoric, psychoanalysis, and media studies. Its arguments are enriched by numerous concrete examples and analyses that bring theory to life and help to reach beyond an academic audience. Bogel's ground-breaking study takes our understanding of metaphor in new and important directions. | 1 | 56,79 € | Vaata
