Nominally an independent commercial enterprise, but actually operating on behalf of the Russian government, and in close cooperation with the Ministry of Defence and its Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), and the Federal Security Service (FSB), it has been deployed to perform a very wide range of military and paramilitary tasks, provide security, and collect intelligence. Through much of its existence, the activity of the Wagner Group appears to have been clandestine and poorly recorded. In practice, the operating principles of this PMC have been very similar to those of numerous similar enterprises from the West. Since its failed coup attempt in the summer of 2023, the fate of the Wagner Group appears to be sealed. Indeed, presently, it is highly unlikely that a Russian PMC might ever again have the same power and influence that Wagner once wielded. However, this does not mean that such all such enterprises have been completely disbanded: only that the Wagner Group has not (yet) been replaced by some other enterprise – whether Russian or foreign. In fact, we are witnessing a recurrent trend that is likely to become even more characteristic for conflicts in the coming decades as almost everybody who can afford to pay for the services of a PMC is hiring them. In the Catholic culture, some saintly figures are proposed as exemplary interpreters and mediators of the Scriptures. Instances of this kind are great preacher saints such as Saint Dominic, or translators like Saint Jerome. These characters can be ascribed to a specific model of sainthood, which is of utmost interest from a semiotic perspective, because it is connected to social, political and cultural issues that influence how the interpretation of the sacred texts is conceptualized, practiced, and evaluated. The way in which the work of these interpreters is evaluated and narrated should thus be read in the framework of tensions concerning both the values and criteria underlying the interpretative practice, and issues of authority and authoriality. This complex problematic knot is particularly evident in light of the controversies surrounding the representation of women interpreters as exemplary figures and official judgments about their exegetic endeavors. As a consequence, this essay highlights three main interpretative roles taken on by saintly figures (translation, comment, production of hypertexts) and highlights how this interpretative role is a central feature of their exemplarity in the Church's discourse. It then focuses on exemplary female interpreters, in particular women preachers, with a focus on the figure and work of Domenica da Paradiso (1473-1553), a preacher who explicitly addressed the role of the woman interpreter and cuttingly interpreted the Pauline prescription that women should be silent in the church, the prescription serving as one of the main scriptural bases on which the Church legitimized women's exclusion from preaching in public. Diese Charaktere können einem spezifischen Modell der Heiligkeit zugeschrieben werden, das aus einer semiotischen Perspektive von größtem Interesse ist, weil es mit sozialen, politischen und kulturellen Fragen verbunden ist, die beeinflussen, wie die Interpretation der heiligen Texte konzeptualisiert, praktiziert und bewertet wird. Intercultural and interreligious dialogue and the importance of nurturing memory as an antidote to social inequalities and conflict are known to be at the center of Pope Francis' pontificate. A salient and particularly significant moment is undoubtedly represented by the Pontiff's apostolic journey to Canada (July 24 to July 30, 2022), described as a "penitential pilgrimage" to "implore from God forgiveness, healing and reconciliation" for the suffering inflicted by the policies of assimilation and enfranchisement. Starting from these premises, this paper examines the semiotic articulation of the apostolic journey, understood as a complex multimodal construct made up of a multiplicity of languages, symbols, texts and discourses, to account for its symbolic efficacy, within the framework of the distinctive traits that characterize the figure of Francis, intended as a peculiar charismatic leader. It is against this backdrop that the paper will examine, in addition to official texts and speeches of Francis' apostolic journey to Canada, gestures and behaviors that proved capable of generating wide interest in the media and public opinion, helping to deepen the semiotic analysis of an "apostolate of the ear", focused on the importance of "listening with the ear of the heart". Using the approach of structuralist semiotics in dialogue with the semiotics of culture, the article sets out to demonstrate how the penitential pilgrimage proves to be a paradigmatic case of a process of memory reactivation aimed at strengthening intercultural dialogue, where the possibility of shaping a collective actant capable of overcoming the wounds of a trauma long kept silent can only be based on overcoming the separation between cosmology and theology. Der interkulturelle und interreligiöse Dialog und die Bedeutung der Erinnerungsarbeit als Gegenmittel zu sozialen Ungleichheiten und Konflikten ste hen bekanntlich im Mittelpunkt des Pontifikats von Papst Franziskus. Einen herausragenden und besonders bedeutsamen Moment stellt zweifellos die apostolische Reise des Papstes nach Kanada (24. bis 30. Juli 2022) dar, die als Bußwallfahrt beschrieben wird, mit dem Ziel von Gott Vergebung, Heilung und Versöhnung für das durch die Poli tik der Assimilierung und Entrechtung zugefügte Leid zu erflehen. Ausgehend von diesen Prämissen untersucht der Beitrag die semiotische Artikulation der apostolischen Reise, die als komplexes multimodales Konstrukt verstanden wird, das sich aus einer Vielzahl von Sprachen, Symbolen, Texten und Diskursen zusammensetzt, um ihre symbolische Wirksamkeit im Rahmen der charakteristischen Züge zu erklären, die die Figur des Franziskus charakterisieren, der als besonderer charismatischer Führer verstanden wird. The branded self is a distributed identity, contingent upon fleeting exchanges of transitory preferences in an incessant and volatile process of mass consumption. The ethical or 'Eudaimonic' self requires a shift away from the competitive scramble of scarcity-based economics to an economy of abundance. The field or opening within which we encounter such an irreducible excess is character itself, which the ancient Greeks associated with the daimon. The daimon asks us to respond to, and take responsibility for, that which we hold most sacred, our most precious ideals and aspirations. In this way, identity formation shifts from endless selfpromotion, in an effort to successfully market one's personal brand, to self-demotion before that which transcends us, such as the infinitely worthy Other. Attunement to what simultaneously constitutes and transcends character binds us in shared responsibility to ideals that, with the impertinence of wonder, we dare to name. This paper presents an ethnographic project investigating the relationship between Ukrainian refugees and the Polish population. Ethnographic evidence indicates difficult relations between the two communities. Following Lotman, these problems will be interpreted as frictions among codes. The paper points out some risks and suggests several solutions based on the notion of model, used in simplifying translations between different regions of a semiosphere as well as in the creation of information. The report summarizes the DGS Congress "Zeichen.Kulturen.Digitalität" at RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau, Campus Landau, which aimed to deal with the topic digitality and digitization from a semiotic and cultural studies perspective, focusing on the interplay between the digital and the analog. Centered were current topics in digital semiotics and the influence of technology on culture. The keynotes shed light, among other things, on the fundamental role of artificial intelligence, multimodal aspects, the significance of AI in education, and its semiotic implications. Moreover, they provided important impulses for the various sections. Diverse areas such as comics, fashion, digital humanities, and design were covered in the sessions, with social and ethical issues also being addressed. The concluding discussion concentrated on the role of AI in education, emphasizing the necessity of human judgment and ethical reflection. Zusammenfassung. Der Bericht fasst den DGS-Kongress "Zeichen.Kulturen.Digitalität" an der RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau, Campus Landau zusammen. Ziel des Kongresses war es, sich dem Themenkomplex der Digitalität und Digitalisierung aus semiotischer und kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive zu nähern und dabei insbesondere das Zusammenspiel von Digitalem und Analogem in den Blick zu nehmen. Damit standen aktuelle Themen der digitalen Semiotik und der Einfluss von Technologie auf Kultur im Fokus. Die Plenarvorträge beleuchteten unter anderem die grundlegende Funktion künstlicher Intelligenz, multimodale Aspekte, die Bedeutung von KI in der Bildung sowie deren semiotischen Implikationen. Darüber hinaus lieferten sie wichtige Impulse für die unterschiedlichen Sektionen. In den einzelnen Sektionen wurden vielfältige Bereiche, darunter Comics, Mode, Digital Humanities und Design behandelt, wobei auch soziale und ethische Fragestellungen thematisiert wurden. Die Abschlussdiskussion konzentrierte sich auf die Rolle von KI in der Bildung und unterstrich zugleich die Notwendigkeit menschlicher Urteilskraft und ethischer Reflexion.
